KonMari Method

It’s all about joy - when the core of a method is joy, in my mind it’s a winner! Let's dive in a little deeper.

The KonMari Method, created by tidying guru Marie Kondo, offers a fresh way to declutter that's totally different from what most of us are used to doing when we have a clear out. That in itself is the point, we usually focus on what we’re getting rid off, what we’re clearing out, rather than what we’re keeping. So often I used to go through my wardrobe and get rid of the things that I didn’t wear, or didn’t like or were broken or didn’t fit. And what I kept was whatever was left. But the KonMari Method turns this around. It says, "Hey, focus on what sparks joy!" So, you think about what you really want to keep, not what you want to get rid of. It's all about finding joy in your belongings. Who knows what you might discover no longer sparks joy in your life. People have switched careers, moved cities or found new partners as a result of tidying using the KonMari Method.

And when it comes to the practical side of things, the method suggests tidying by category, not by location. Again, a totally new way of doing things. So often we set a goal to tidy up a room. But there may be things from ten different categories in one drawer, let alone one room. Instead you tackle specific categories of items, beginning with clothes, then moving onto books, papers, komono (miscellaneous items), and, finally, sentimental items. This lets you see everything you have across your whole space, broken down into categories, which makes it easier to stay organised in the long term. It does mean sometimes things have to get a little messier before they become clearer - but it’s totally worth it!

Marie Kondo's vision is to declutter and organise the world, and I wholeheartedly want to join her in this noble quest. So, my decision to become a KonMari consultant is not only about helping people; it's about embarking on a fulfilling journey to make a lasting impact, one tidied space at a time. If you're interested in working with me to tidy your space, I'd love to tackle your clutter together!

The 6 Basic Rules of Tidying

Rule 1: Commit yourself to tidying up

Are you ready to commit your time and effort? This method gives you an opportunity to reset your life, but only if you're fully on board. The effort will be totally worth it in the end.

Rule 2: Imagine your ideal lifestyle

Start the journey by setting objectives - I will guide you on this. Your vision is the most powerful tool. It's the north star for all of the decisions you will make moving forward.

Rule 3: Finish
discarding first

Complete the tidying process before moving onto storage. You will have a better idea of how much actually needs to be stored once you have decided what to keep and what to discard.

Rule 4: Tidy by category, not by location

This helps you to understand the amount you own, assess each object in the proper context, identify duplicates and re-evaluate storage habits and solutions. This rule is a game changer!

Rule 5: Follow the
right order

The order is clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous i.e. everything else) and finally sentimental items. The order is designed specifically to help you hone your sensitivity to joy.

Rule 6: Ask yourself
if it sparks joy

The KonMari Method is about deciding what to keep, not what to get rid of, so you surround yourself with items that will support you in your life. Always decide to keep what sparks joy!
